Solved: Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Fails to Launch / Black Screen

Just get CoD Black Ops 2 and encounter a black screen? Did you launch the game and it didn't open? Or maybe it just crashed with an error after you tried to play it -- such as at the intro / opening cinematic scene.

No biggie. You should be able to fix it.

Follow the below methods to troubleshoot it away.

This works for people who get the DLC Packs (such as from the Season Pass) or gets the game from Steam or has the Black Ops 2 Collector's Editions, which are: Hardened Edition, Care Package, and the Digital Deluxe Edition.

How to Fix Call of Duty: Black Ops II Launch Failure

There are several tweaks you can perform to try to fix this problem.
-- If you got the game via Steam, then try to revalidate / validate your game cache
-- Right click the game's EXE -> properties -> enable compatibility mode for Windows XP OR, if you are on Windows 8, then try setting the compatibility to Windows 7 (works for 32-bit / x86 and 64-bit / x64)
-- Run the game in administrator mode / admin mode (this is never ideal, however)
-- Update your video card drivers to the latest version, as these updates can solve game compatibility issues with your graphics card (works for all graphics cards -- intel, nvidia, ati, etc). This often helps with lag too, so if you end up experiencing lag, this can increase your frames per second (fps)
-- Get the latest version of DirectX

To expand on the DirectX issue, a lot of the time when a game does not run, it is because you are missing an important file. To ensure this is not the case, run the following included files below. The Steam paths are:
\Steamapps\Common\Call of Duty Black Ops II\redist\vcredist_x86.exe
\Steamapps\Common\Call of Duty Black Ops II\redist\DirectX\dxsetup.exe
