Dark Souls: How to See in Tomb of the Giants

Dark Souls

Dark souls

This level...sucks. It is perhaps as annoying as the ghost one ~ the New Londo ruins. This is largely in-part by the pitch black darkness. You can do a couple of things to see despite this though. And luckily, the level is pretty short and not too hard over all.

With this help article, we will get straight to the point. There are 4 ways to see in this darkness!

-- Equip the Skull Lantern as a shield and use it to brighten things up. This is obtained via necromancers.
-- Cast the sorcery / spell / magic called Light
-- Use the Sunlight Maggot helmet
-- Turn up the brightness of your TV..A LOT

Obviously option 4 is a bit cheap in this game, but you can do it!

While the level is pretty easy over all, I'd suggest turning human and summoning help so that you can quickly finish it. Note that there ARE some good items here -- such as the Large Divine Ember and Covetous Silver Serpent Ring. Get those!

All I have to say is -- GG / Good Game!

Dark Souls - Best Bow & Crossbows VS Bows

Dark Souls: Best Bow

Dark Souls: Best Bow

In Dark Souls, there are so many choices. There's the i>Black Bow of Pharis VS Composite Bow, Longbow vs Dragonslayer Greatbow, Light Crossbow vs Sniper Crossbow, etc.

It goes without saying that the strongest one here is the Dragonslayer Greatbow with its special ammo. But at 10 weight, greatbows are pretty heavy and don't fit most people's builds. I won't bother even touching on crossbows too much, as they are less valuable (including the sniper crossbow which is also heavy -- 8 weight).

Crossbows VS Bows: The crossbows are faster but cannot aim. Bows CAN aim though, thus making them much more useful. This is kind of ironic considering that the "sniper crossbow" can't be used to aim at enemies.

(If want to know how to aim, note that you need to use your bow two-handed).

Anyway, this page will focus mainly between the two best every day use bows -- Black Bow of Pharis and Composite Bow.

The Pharis bow has an increased range AND a ParamBonus of S for Dexterity (the strength bonus is E). This scales well for a dexterity build / quality build. The composite bow has a C scale bonus for both Strength and Dex so this can be great for a strength character build. However, it has a decreased range. On the bright side, it DOES shoot faster though!

Composite Bow (CB)
+ C bonus for strength
+ Faster shooting (best bow for PVP)
- Shorter range
- C dexterity bonus

Black Bow of Pharis (BBoP)
+ Longer range (lurer enemies / snipe)
+ S ParamBonus for dex
- Slower shooting speed
- E Strength bonus

And there you have it. BOTH weapons have their purpose in the game and pretty much work in either situation.

Q: Is the Darkmoon Bow good?
Yes, the DMB / DB is good. But I honestly can't recommend it over the two bows mentioned here. It's not as strong as the composite can be and while it is faster than the BBoP, it just doesn't scale well in the end (E/D/-/D). Maybe worth trying for a faith build. You can make this by killing Gwyndolin -- the leader of the Darkmoon Convenant and using his soul and a +10 bow to create this weapon via the Giant Blacksmith.

Q: Is the Avelyn Crossbow good?
It's ... an ok repeater crossbow. It wastes bolts like crazy since you shoot three shots at once. These shots are weakened though as to not make the weapon overpowered, but are still very strong. If you manage to hit your opponent with all 3 at once, then it's worth using. But a lot of the time that's hard to do (such as in a PVP situation). I personally do not use it...at all. You can find it in The Duke's Archives.

Dark Souls: Best Divine Weapon for Strength & Dexterity Builds

Dark Souls: Best Divine Weapon

Dark Souls: Best Divine Weapon

Divine weapons and strength or dex builds...don't mix too well. This is because when you upgrade a weapon to be divine, it loses some of the scaling / paramnbonus benefits. So unless you are attempting a faith or a hybrid build, you won't want a divine weapon for anything except for killing regenerating skeletons in the Catacombs. That's what we are focusing on. Killing those sweet, sweet skeletons in that beautiful Catacombs level (and the necromancers, of course).

Firstly, do NOT make your primary weapon a Divine weapon. You will want to use an alternate weapon instead -- something that is pretty good, but does not cut it as your primary weapon. OR, you can go with a weapon that already sports the divine ability.

Possibly the BEST weapons to use without needing to modify anything at all is..

Silver Knight Spear -- It is a very long weapon, and has a modifier of E / C for Strength and Dex. It DOES kill skeletons for good without requiring faith and even though it has no Holy status bonus modifier. Get it from Silver Knights located in Anor Londo. It's the best idea.

If you don't mind having to do a modification to a weapon, then consider...

Occult Club -- This is normally, as implied by the title, an occult weapon. This means it can be reverted / downgraded to a +5 divine weapon -- making it powerful against the skeletons and an easy way to get a full-fledged divine weapon! It's located in Anor Londo by the Havel armor set.

If you have a lot of strength and perhaps are doing a strength + faith hybrid build, then check out...

Grant - This great hammer has B scaling for strength and A scaling for faith! It requires 34 strength to use when two handing it. Not the best weapon of course, but the scaling is nice.

If you don't mind having a bit of faith, then you can use the following weapon below (note though: it is weak sauce)

Astoria Straight Sword -- If you have this, it doesn't require too much faith to use and can be found early in the game at Valley of the Drakes using the Master Key. As it does require a bit of faith, it is a small recommendation. It is also pretty weak -- but so are the skeletons you must kill.

Anyway, hopefully that helps you in your Dark Souls divine expedition of the Catacombs!

Good luck in the game! And hopefully patches make the Divine weapons more worth doing for other builds.

FIX Dark Souls - Crashing / Black Screen (Windows 8, 7, etc)

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Windos 8 Crash Fix

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die...Now!

Did you try to run Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition on your Windows 8 computer (including consumer preview edition [32-bit / X86 VERSIONS AND 64-BIT X64]) and run into an annoying problem -- Dark Souls crashes when you load it? This effects Steam versions of the game, as well as Origin and CD / DVD copies as well.

Do not fear, my fellow RPG PC gamer. We are here to help you with that so that you can begin collecting souls in this epic game. Note that this helps all forms of launch failure with the game (including directly loading the EXE and black screen or window mode issues).

If the game is already installed, then follow these steps. If it isn't then install + open Steam, then install + open Dark Souls (to verify crash).

Note that these fixes work on all versions of Windows -- Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

How to Fix: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition Crashing

1) Open the Control Panel and uninstall GFWL (Games for Windows Live). There are 2 parts -- uninstall both.
2) Download & install the latest version of Games for Windows Marketplace Client
3) Launch the game

It should now work! The reason it may have caused a crash error message (such as "Dark souls Prepare To Die Edition Executable has stopped working") for you previously is because an old version of GFWL was actually installed instead of the newest version.

Still crashing? Then continue below...

Solve Dark Souls Freeze / Error on Load / Crash

-- If you are crashing because of vsfilter.dll, then try renaming this file (locate it through search). If that doesn't work, then make sure to name it back to the original file!
-- Restart your computer
-- Remove ANY game controllers that are plugged in (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, etc).
-- If you installed a mod, such as DSFix, then disable it (rename it or move it). Old versions of this mod are causing the game to crash after updating it!
-- Similarly, the new version of the DSFix is working fine for people. So if you haven't used it yet and are black screening near the intro / opening of the game, then enable the "Skip Intro" feature
-- Install the latest DirectX drivers! This includes the ones that came with the game AND (if that doesn't help) the newest copy from Microsoft's site!
-- Install the latest .NET Framework!
-- Run DarkSouls.exe in admin mode (right click the exe -> run as administrator)
-- Download xlive.dll and put it in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder! You should have this file already somewhere though so you should use the included DLL. Run SEARCH for it.
-- REPAIR (via Control Panel) Windows Live Essentials

Boom shocka locka! The game should now work for you if you followed the troubleshooting tips in this guide. If it doesn't, then maybe the planets are aligned in such a way that the world is working against you! Kidding, I think! Feel free to comment if you need additional help to get this awesome game to run without crashing or freezing or error'ing.

Remember folks -- Dark souls isn't just a game. It's a lifestyle!

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Update - 12/20/2012

Dark Souls

Dark Souls Patch

An update was released on 12/20/2012 for the PC / Steam / Origin copies of the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

The new patch solves the broken stereo downmix issue. Basically: if you weren't using a 5.1 or 7.1 (or similar) speaker configuration, you would miss out on a lot of different sound effects. This update brings those sounds to people with a 2.0 or 2.1 speaker configuration.

It also adds some performance tweaks to make the game a bit less CPU intensive.

If you are using DSFix to increase your frames per second (FPS) limit, then the game will crash on startup unless you updat to the new version of DSFix.

Disabling the DLL (rename it or move it) will stop the crashing, as well, but you might as well just update it.

The changelog / updatelog:
-- Performance enhancements
-- Stereo / Audio fixes

So in conclusion: get the update!

Note that this is not the same patch that is available on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was 1.07

Dark Souls FAQ: Laurentius of the Great Swamp - Gone Missing

Dark Souls: Laurentius of the Great Swamp

This Handsome Man is Pyromancer Laurentius

Unfortunately, Laurentius can disappear from Firelink Shrine after answering a question in a certain way when talking to him if you upgraded your Pyromancy flame through his old master -- Quelana. This applies to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (PS3) versions of the game, as well as the Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition PC / Steam / Origin version of the game.

The in-game conversation goes like:
"Ah, hello, there. You've been a stranger these days. Why, what spectacular pyromancy. Tell me about it. I have never seen anything like it."

You can say YES or NO -- to tell him how you got stronger or not. This warrants the following conversations:

"Why, yes, of course! Thank you for sharing. I'm still an able pyromancer. I shall locate her myself. I am in your debt, once again."

"I see. I suppose I was mistaken. In any case, I definitely trust you. Apologies, my friend. Forget that I said anything.

You may be thinking to yourself: Well, I do like you Laurentius! So I will go ahead and tell you, my swampy companion!

If you value HIS life, then do NOT tell him. He will go searching for his master in Blighttown, and WILL die, thus becoming hollow. You'll end up finding him there and unfortunately...he will try to kill you. Do him a favor and end his life. If you decide to be a jerk and NOT tell him (perhaps you value his company at Firelink Shrine in this lonely, lonely game), then he will stay there forever -- giving you a chance to stare at his beautiful swamp atire. He will hate you in secret forever, but that won't bother you, because deep down you know that you are the only reason he is alive.

Laurentius is hollow. Can I bring him back to life or turn him human again?
The answer is a sad one -- no, you cannot. He cannot be revived once killed either.

Does telling Laurentius where I learned my pyromancy give me anything?
Nope. There are no rewards for this. It does nothing for you in the game, except for breaking your heart.

Can I buy / learn Flash Sweat or Iron Flesh from anyone other than Laurentius in Dark Souls?
No -- he unfortunately is the only one who has these in the whole game so you cannot learn it elsewhere. If you killed him, then you must wait until your next playthrough in the game to get a chance to learn these pyromancy skills.

Are Flash Sweat and Iron Flesh worth getting?
These two skills ARE good and have their purposes in this game (regardless of what others may tell you). You'll find more use out of Iron Flesh though, so if you only feel like getting one of them, then that's the one to get.

Where can I find Laurentius?
You probably didn't come here for this information, as you already found him, but you can find Laurentius in the Depths area by the Butcher. He's stuck in a pot. To free him, roll into the pots and then talk to him. When you rest at a bonfire, he'll be at Firelink Shrine afterward and can sell you Pyromancy abilities if you so happen to want him to. If you accidentally hurt him / attacked him and made him aggro, then whatever you do, DO NOT kill him. Run away like a pansy and go absolve yourself of sin, you naughty child!

I would like to point out that if you are reading this article, then it most likely is too late to save the life of Laurentius. Remember this -- they say time heals all wounds. Rest assured, it does not in this case 😉 Feel free to comment below if you are full of grief at the loss of Laurentius from your Dark Souls game world. Or laugh in happiness. Both work.

Borderlands 2: How to Get Behind Marcus's Counter

Did you know that you can get behind the counter in Marcus's shop?

It takes a bit of work to get this glitch done (you may die a couple of times)...But it can be done. You have to bounce yourself across the screen using grenades to explode your way from different points throughout the map.

But if you are dedicated...and have enough time on your hands, then it's worth attempting it for fun! Remember: do not use a grenade mod when doing this. Cool secret, huh? Having a video guide definitely helps.

How to Fix: Far Cry 3 - Black Screen / Launch Failure / Crash

Far Cry 3

Fix Far Cry 3 Errors

Ubisoft really knows how to make a great game.

And that can be seen VERY easily when playing Far Cry 3, which was just recently released.

You can get it the usual ways -- on Steam, CD / DVD, Origin, etc. It's also available on all platforms -- Windows PC, Xbox 360, and of course PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Playing as Jason Brody, you destroy everyone, and everything, that crosses your path.

After downloading the game (digital copy) or installing it through a disc, you may encounter or simply notice that Far Cry 3 fails to launch. This can be in the form of a Far Cry 3 Black Screen or simply you launching the game and nothing happens. Alternatively, an error message could pop up too indicating that Far Cry 3 crashed.

Far Cry 3: Fix Game Launch Failure

There are some common ways to solve an annoying problem with the game not opening correctly. Whether you are using Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or even the beloved Windows XP, all of these methods work just the same (for the most part). Follow the guide below to troubleshoot your way into finding a solution to get your Far Cry III game running.

-- Install PunkBuster manually via the support folder! Thanks SUNSPY
-- Included with the game is a DirectX install (this is with Steam copies as well). INSTALL IT! This can also fix audio / no sound issues for FC3.
-- You may be tired of hearing this, but update your NVIDIA, ATI, Intel, etc -- graphics card drivers to the LATEST version! These new video card drivers supply great hotfixes for games that solve a lot of different bugs and glitches by tweaking how the drivers / card interfaces with the game. They provide a good increase in the rate of frames per second (FPS) as well, so if your game was going to stutter, then it could help that as well as solve problems with crashing and black screen on launch.
-- Depending on when you view this guide, make sure you immediately patch your game with the latest available patch.
-- Validate / Revalidate your game cache if you are using Steam!
-- Set your game compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 (right click the EXE -> Properties -> Compatibility Settings)
-- It is never ideal, but try running under "Administrator Mode"
-- Change your screen resolution to something lower
-- Certain codecs can cause issues with games so keep that in mind (this rarely happens though so don't count on it)

These are all the fixes available as of right now. Expect more to come soon -- so if you didn't solve your problem yet, come back tomorrow for more game-specific Far Cry 3 game fixes!

Playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II on Windows 8

Call of Duty: Black Ops II cover

How to Fix
Call of Duty: Black Ops II

With such a new operating system as Windows 8 (or consumer preview), you would think it could handle all games pretty well. Unfortunately, it doesn't. It works great on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 though.

CoD: Black Ops 2 is a perfect example. The game may crash with an error dump, fail to launch, freeze, show a black screen, or simply not run after launching the game EXE (or through Steam / Origin).

There are some ways to fix it so that the game WILL run. So if you want to play Call of Duty: Black Ops II on Windows 8, you're in luck!

Running Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on Windows 8

Okay. It's not too difficult to get this game to run at the moment, though the success rate depends entirely on your setup.
-- Install the included DirectX package included with the game
-- Next, get the latest version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (32-bit, 64-bit) -- as you may in fact not have these missing files and thus your game is not working
-- Run the game in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode (you can try Windows 98 compatibility mode too, but it will lag if it works)
-- Install the latest NVIDIA, ATI / AMD, Intel graphics card or video card drivers (they include hotfixes for situations such as this where bugs or glitches prevent the game from running or cause it to lag or freeze)

A patch or update will be available soon to solve this officially, but you must wait until then. Many have no problems running the game, but end up encountering errors after Windows Update...so be careful! I'd recommend updating anyway, as you may have already been affected by the update error and a solution is around the corner.

(Fix) Fallout: New Vegas - Crashing, Lagging, Freezing

Fallout: New VegasThe Fallout series is amazing (especially F:NV / FNV).

One may say that it helped redefine, or at the very least, expand, the First Person Shooter (FPS) genre.

With its nice story line, good graphics, and interesting gameplay, it's easy to see how.

With the latest patches and updates, it runs pretty well on most machines, but some many require game fixes to help get rid of certain bugs and glitches being experienced.

These solutions work on all copies of the game -- cd / dvd, Steam, Origin, etc.

The operating system (OS) doesn't matter either, so these fixes will work on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and even Windows 8.
